The Time Machine

In the novel “The Time Machine”, Herbert George Wells gave examples of how life would be like in the future.  Although the travels of the time traveler are fictional, he tells the readers that the future would be grim and dreadful. The time traveler states that as he met the people of the future that “a flow of disappointment rushed across my mind.

The future of the human race showed its inclination in the beginning of the novel when the time traveler first met the Eloi.  The time traveler depicted these futuristic people as childish and having the intellectual level of a five year old.  For example, the Eloi people asked the time traveler if he came from the sun in a thunderstorm.  Later in the book a woman named Weena, seeing the flames, almost lunged into a campfire because the fire was a new strange thing to her and she wanted to play with it.

The Morlocks are supposedly humans only they evolved differently. These creatures that hide in the shadows were carnivores and ate the Eloi people due to the shortage of other animals.  The Morlocks were more intelligent when it came to mechanics but by using the Eloi as a food source it throws off the delicate food chain.  This is another example of how the human race was declining.

Near the end of the novel, the time traveler travels into the far future. In this era humans are extinct, or so the time traveler believes because he could not see any and giant crabs populate the world.  After a frightful encounter with a crab the time traveler embarks farther into the future where the crabs are no longer around.  In this period of time most life on earth is dead and an ice age was engulfing the earth.  This clearly shows that the future of the earth and human race is dreadful.

The time traveler did not bring back good news from the future only despair.  His story shows that the fate of the world is harsh and savage.
