I think the statement Awhy not seize the pleasure at once?  How often is happiness destroyed by preparation, foolish preparation?@ is true about life?  I believe this means if you have the opportunity to do something in life it should be seized while you have the chance because you may not again.

In the story the door in the wall the main character Lionel Wallace see=s the green door many times but usually on the way to do something so he does not enter.  Later in life when he=s older and has many chances to go through but he has a very important job and would have to sacrifice something. I believe he is following in his fathers footsteps and that he is meant to do something else and that=s why the door is appearing.

There are many examples in the story of where he is longing to go through the door and regrets not doing it.  One example of how he regrets not entering it is  A then very haltingly at first but afterwards more easily he began to tell of the thing that was hidden in his life, the haunting memory of a beauty and happiness that filled his heart with insatiable longings that made all the interests and spectacle of worldly seem dull and tedious and vain to him@ .  Later in life he admits he wanders around at night looking for the door.  Also there are examples of irony in the story like AI passed within twenty inches of the door, if I say goodnight to them I asked myself what will happen@ .

This book has many meanings that people could have different opinions about.  Some things were meant to happen and making a decision no matter how small or unimportant it may seem can affect the rest of your life.
